Everyone knows that truckers have their own version of communication over radio. And familiar with the popular “10-4” term used meaning message received or understood. What you might not know is that it originates from a set of “10-codes.” These codes were created to standardize communication in police and emergency services.

This week, retail giant Target launched an employee policy called 10-4. Oh man, this isn’t going to be good, I can tell. It’s aimed at enhancing the in-store experience and improving customer loyalty. The policy “requires employees who are within 10 feet of customers to smile, make eye contact, wave, and use friendly, approachable, and welcoming body language” and employees within 4 feet of customers “must personally greet the guests, smile, and initiate a warm, helpful interaction.”

“Breaker, Breaker 1-9” (trucker slang). Target I have some questions about this policy. Why not call it 9 to 5 instead? That’s more work-relatable than fun-loving 10-4. Similar distance. But I guess you want associates to acknowledge the new policy as “message received” “understood”? So if you’re pretty solid with the 10-4 policy name, why didn’t you launch it back on October 4? Get it, 10-4? Giving associates plenty of time to practice the new rules. Be ready just in time for the busy holiday season. If they’re busy determining distances, focusing on what and when to say it, will that cut down on productivity? I must stop worrying about this as my head is spinning. “Over and out.”

I’m all about good customer service. It’s a lost art if you ask me. That’s what keeps me returning to those retailers where the associates make me feel appreciated for my patronage. I want it to be genuine. Not something forced.

I’m not a huge fan of Target. But I just might stop by soon to get a taste of the 10-4 experience.

Let me know your thoughts on the retailer’s attempt. Am I the only one concerned…LOL.

Thanks for stopping by. Until next time, have a good day! ~ Hollie
