POP QUIZ: What one seasonal beverage signals the arrival of autumn like no other?
Answer: The Pumpkin Spice Latte (okay, that was too easy).
Am I a fan of Pumpkin Spice Lattes? Not really. I’m more like a “Pumpkin Spice Latte? No, thanks!” person. Sure, I like pumpkin spice. But, I’d much rather munch on it than sip it.
We have Starbucks to thank for introducing us to the PSL back in 2003. Wow! Pumpkin Spice mania was born and it’s led to widespread trends of pumpkin-spice everything. Baked goods and cereals to scented candles and body lotions.
What Is It About Pumpkin Spice That Has Americans So Obsessed?
Is it the warm spices evoking a comforting sensation? Triggering happy, cozy memories related to fall and the upcoming holidays.
Is it the planned scarcity? Sense of urgency and FOMO (fear of missing out)?
Is it due to social media? A highly-photographed tradition. People wanting to join in the trend?
I’d say it’s all of the above, and more.
What’s the Future of Pumpkin Spice – Is Fatigue Setting In?
Research shows the Pumpkin Spice Latte remains a beloved seasonal tradition for many. The pumpkin spice economy in 2025 is estimated to be $1.1 billion globally. But pumpkin spice’s brother and sister, salted caramel and cinnamon, are gaining ground. Not to mention cousin, maple brown sugar. Really, no matter the spice. It’s the deliciousness (aka sugar) that keeps us coming back for more. Am I right?
New variations are emerging using healthier natural ingredients and green packaging. Influencer and marketing companies continue to craft creative ads. The pumpkin spice craze is more than just a passing trend. It’s a fall phenomenon ingrained in modern culture.
Whether you’re a die-hard PSL fan or a curious newcomer, you can’t deny the beverage’s significant role. It celebrates the spirit of autumn.
